THOMASVILLE- For years Thomasville High School cheerleaders have been known for their stunts and exciting sideline routines at cheerleading competitions. However, this year the team is starting a new chapter and will be competing in a Sideline Cheer competition.

The new form of competition focuses more on cheers and dances, while engaging with the crowd. Cheerleaders are still allowed to tumble and stunt, although it is only allowed during their one-minute crowd leading or their one minute fight song routine.

Coach Elaina Johnson said she is excited to try something new with the team as the sport continues to evolve.

Senior Delaney Dyksterhouse, who previously competed with the competition cheer team is looking forward a different style of cheer and way to showcase her school spirit.

“I’m a little nervous, but I’m excited,” she said. “I love competition cheer in general, so I know this will be fun.”

Dyksterhouse noted that the two forms of competition are not all that different beyond stunting, but sideline cheer is much less stressful.

“I really like them both, I think I’m just nervous about our first competition,” she said.

The THS cheerleaders will take part in their first Sideline Cheer Competition next Saturday at Thomas County Middle School.

Understandably nervous, other cheerleaders such as junior Reagan Gibson feel THS has what it takes to be the best on the sideline.

“It’s different and something that no one has ever done before, but I think our team has a lot of potential and it’s something we could possibly win,” she said. “I’m definitely still nervous because our band dances and fight songs aren’t usually this fast, but I’m feeling confident.”

Johnson said the team will be competing against other area schools of their size and looks forward to seeing all their hard work come together on the sidelines.
