THOMASVILLE LIBRARY:
A brief history of the Pavo Library
Trending
Spearheaded by Pavo City Councilwoman Karyl Beal, a library was opened to the residents of the City of Pavo on July 21, 1987. Through the assistance of then-Mayor L. M. Taylor, the library was supported by the Colquitt County Regional Library and housed in the Pavo men’s club. CCRL provided books and other support materials through bookmobile visits, using the men’s club as a drop point until the Thomas County Public Library System was established in 1988.
Over the next five years, a new library location was secured – the Pavo women’s club – and the building renovated to re-open as the Pavo branch of the Thomas County Public Library System. This new location opened approximately 1200 square feet of space for library resources, increasing the collection to extend some 3500 materials, and included a kitchen, meeting room and outside deck. The building was obtained and renovations made possible through a combination of the passage of a local option sales tax and funds raised by selling cookbooks led by the Pavo Library Committee. The ribbon was cut by Mayor L. M. Taylor and Library Director Dave Eden on Sunday, May 16, 1993, officially opening the Pavo Public Library to its residents.
The Pavo Public Library still resides in this location today. The layout has transitioned over the years and the landscaping fluctuates season to season, but the resources and sense of community it creates have not lessened. The Library continues to update and purchase fresh materials monthly, offer educational and recreational activities to the public, and holds an annual Summer Reading Program designed to celebrate the magic of literature at every age. If you have never visited our Pavo location, why not take a trip! Borrow a book, meet the local librarians and tour this quaint, cozy location of your Thomas County Public Library System.
