PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Waldrop stands with Marketing Director for Georgia High School Football Daily Ted Langford.

THOMASVILLE — The historic game played in Albany, Georgia between Brookwood and Deerfield-Windsor last week is no secret. In fact, it may be the biggest story in the state of Georgia. The Warriors etched their name into the record books as two players set state records. Quarterback Rodge Waldrop shattered the single game passing record by over 150 yards with his 698 passing yard performance and Rex Schofill set a state record with 369 receiving yards in the game.

On Wednesday afternoon, the entire Brookwood School gathered in the Beverly Athletic Center as Marketing Director for Georgia High School Football Daily Ted Langford, presented Waldrop with the Georgia High School Football Daily Player of the Week award. When Waldrop stepped onto the gymnasium floor, the student body was chanting his name, “Rodge, Rodge, Rodge!”

“There are more than 400 high schools in the state of Georgia and thousands and thousands of players and we review all the games all over the state to determine which player had the biggest and best game from the previous week,” Langford said as he addressed the student body. “Now I’m not going to kid you, there were a lot of great performances over this past week. More than normal. We had serious discussions and meetings about players from Valdosta High School, from Jones County High School, from Columbia High School, and from Loganville High School. But, in every meeting, every discussion we had, one name, one player kept coming up. That player was senior quarterback Rodge Waldrop from Brookwood School.”

Waldrop not only set a state record with 698 passing yards in the game. He also tied the state record for single game passing touchdowns with nine and set a school record with 42 completions. But, he wasn’t the only one honored. Langfrod was sure to recognize other players who contributed in the history contest. Schofill, who, in addition to his state record, set school records for receiving touchdowns and receptions, Seth Boggs, who initially broke the school receiving yards record with 297, Chapman Wolsfelt, who finished the game with 19 total tackles and nine solo tackles, as well as several other players. But in the end, it was the Warriors leader Waldrop that Langford announced was their State Player of the Week.

“It feels really good. After the game, I knew I had a lot of yards but I didn’t think I had that much until someone came up to me and told me. It’s just been really good,” said Waldrop about his historic performance. “I’m going to give credit to our wide receivers. They did a great job running routes. They did the little things right, but going into that game I didn’t think we were going to be able to throw it around that much.”

When asked what two athletes holding state records means to the Brookwood football program, head coach Shane Boggs said, “Who would have ever dreamt of it, right? But, it couldn’t have happened to two better kids. They love it, they work hard, they play for each other. Just an amazing run we’ve had these last few days, getting to celebrate this. I’m so excited for them and proud of our program.”
