SHATTERING RECORDS: Rodge Waldrop threw for 698 years, completing 42 passes and throwing for 9 touchdowns. All of which broke Brookwood records.

ALBANY – Brookwood brought offensive fireworks to Deerfield-Windsor’s homecoming festivities Friday night. The result was a record-setting night that netted the Warriors a victory in the Georgia Independent Athletic Association (GIAA) Region 3-AAA opener.

Quarterback Rodge Waldrop threw for 698 yards, completed 42 passes and threw for nine touchdowns in leading the Warriors to a 59-56 victory over the Knights at Webb Memorial Stadium. All three statistical categories were Brookwood school records.

Rex Schofill caught a school record 25 receptions for 369 yards, another record-setting mark. He also tied a school record with four touchdown receptions, as did Seth Boggs, who also caught 14 receptions for 297 yards.

It was a record-shattering day for Brookwood and head coach Shane Boggs, who couldn’t say enough about his team.

“It’s unbelievable. I’m just so proud of our guys for all that they overcame,” Boggs said. “We obviously had some big time key injuries, but you’ve got to go with what you’ve got. I’m telling you, we saw some guys grow up tonight. We saw some guys all over the place, in really every phase, that made big-time plays. What you saw was a senior quarterback that’s been there and done that. He might not have made a mistake the whole doggone game. He just played so good.

“It’s certainly a team effort, but it starts with quarterback play, and Rodge was unbelievable tonight. I’m so proud of him.”

Waldrop’s passing yardage and Schofill’s receiving yards also appear to have broken the state high school record, according to the ghsfha.org website.

“That’s called demolishing school records that he had already set. It was certainly big time,” Boggs said.

The Warriors needed all of Waldrop and the offense’s firepower, as the defense, minus multiple starters out with injuries, struggled to contain the Knights’ rushing attack. The game went back and forth in the second half. Waldrop passed for more than 400 yards after intermission and orchestrated a last-minute drive to rally the Warriors to the win. He connected with Boggs for a 4-yard scoring toss that capped a 55-yard scoring drive and gave Brookwood a 59-56 advantage.

Deerfield-Windsor had a chance to force overtime with a long 52-yard field goal attempt that sailed short.

Brookwood is now 3-3 overall and will host Southland Academy this Friday.
