GBI makes arrest in 2022 murder case

CAIRO- Nearly one year after the death of Lewis Herring Jr., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has charged Christopher James with murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, theft by taking and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Herring Jr. was found murdered in September 2022, when the GBI was requested to investigate the death.

On Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Cairo PD contacted the GBI to assist in their investigation regarding the murder of Herring Jr., who was only 18 at the time of his death.

Herring was found deceased in the Forrest Lawn Cemetery on 11th Avenue NW in Cairo by CPD after he was reported missing by his parents earlier that day.

GBI agents and crime scene specialists worked with investigators from CPD to find the individual responsible for Herring Jr.’s untimely death.

On September 26, 2023, Herring Jr.’s family finally found peace when the GBI charged James with his murder.

At the time of the new warrants, James was already in the Thomas County Jail on unrelated charges. He will remain there, pending trial in the Herring Jr. case.
