Central sweeps Veterans; alone in second place

THOMASVILLE – Thomas County Central’s softball team scored an important doubleheader sweep of Veterans Thursday night.

The 4-3 and 8-0 wins catapulted the Lady Yellow Jackets into sole possession of second place in the Region 1-6A standings. Central is now 8-2, two games behind first-place Houston County in the loss column. It is unbeaten at 9-0.

“It was a great night. The girls played really well,” Central coach Robyn Trammell said. “The girls just played as a team. Our seniors stepped up. Sarah Stewart had a great night. Laney Mobley pitched both games and was light’s out. Everybody just really did something to contribute. It was awesome to watch.”

Stewart paced the Lady Jackets’ offense with five hits in eight at-bats with three runs and two RBIs in the two games. She had four hits in the team’s 8-0 rout. Kennedy Warren finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run. Gina Morabito, Aly Morabito and Mobley each added a hit for Central.

Mobley pitched five scoreless innings with two hits and two strikeouts to notch the win in game two.

Central overcame 1-0 and 3-2 deficits to score the victory in game one. Stewart’s double tied the game 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning. She later scored on a groundout by Aly Morabito.

Mobley allowed five hits, three runs and two strikeouts in seven innings. She pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

Central now eyes the region title which will be at stake when it travels to Houston County for a doubleheader on Thursday.

“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” Trammell said. “That’s what we’re doing.”
