THOMASVILLE- September is National Recovery Month, and a special community event will take place at Lake Cherokee Park to shine a bright light on what recovery looks like in Southwest Georgia. The Second Annual “Shine On!” recovery event will be hosted by Georgia Pines’ Wecovery Peer Support Center, in partnership with the Georgia Council for Recovery and the DBHDD.

Wecovery’s Program Manager, J. Dan Bailey, says that Wecovery is part of a network of 32 Recovery Support Centers across Georgia. The peer support specialists with Wecovery identify as being in long-term recovery. Wecovery promotes long-term recovery from substance use disorders by providing experienced peer support and advocating for self-directed care.

Bailey continues, “We want to celebrate recovery, not mourn substance misuse. Every day, we witness people move from a place of brokenness and despair to a place of restoration and fulfillment. The transformation is both miraculous and commonplace. We expect recovery. Everyone has something to recover from.”

“Shine on!” will take place on September 29th at the Cherokee Lake Pavilion, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is open to the public, and food will be provided. Music, special guest speakers, and resource tables will all be part of the festivities.

“We are excited to honor the many recovery heroes in our region and have a good time! Connection is the foundation of every recovery pathway. Recovery is real, right now, right here, where we live,” Bailey declared.
