Brookwood takes 2-3 record into region play

THOMASVILLE — Brookwood, along with many other schools across Georgia, has wrapped up non-region play. The Warriors capped off their non-region games with a 62-28 loss to John Milledge Academy. Sometimes it’s hard to find positives in a lopsided loss such as this. However, the Warriors did not play poorly. John Milledge is an extremely talented program and, though the Warriors were beaten, they put up more points on the Trojans than anyone else since November of 2018.

One piece of the Warriors game that continued to shine bright against the Trojans was the special teams. Brookwood’s special teams unit has earned its name as it has been truly special this season. After John Milledge scored their first touchdown, Brookwood’s TJ Thomas responded by returning the kickoff 63 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Rodge Waldrop also punted the ball well, according the head coach Shane Boggs and Rex Schofill got in on the action on a kick return past the 50 to give the Warriors excellent field position.

Offensively, it was more of the same from Brookwood. They played well and were able to move the ball, but failed to be consistent and missed several opportunities.

“Obviously we did some good things to be able to score as many as we did, but we also have enough mistakes to correct that could create a ton of other opportunity,” Boggs said.

The Warriors went 2-4 in the redzone and, at one point, turned the ball over on downs on a fourth and one at the goal line. Simply put, if the Warriors could take advantage of their redzone opportunities they could have a much better record.

As for the defense, Brookwood was plagued by missed tackles, allowing John Milledge to put up 62 on them. However, as they head into region play, the Warriors are looking to correct these mistakes. They will look to be consistent on offense and fundamentally sound on defense.

“We will use this experience to help better prepare us to make a run at this region that we’re about to start,” said Boggs.

Brookwood will travel to Albany next Friday to take on Deerfield-Windsor. The Warriors had a similar start last season, going 2-3 in non-region play and heading into region-play after a big loss. However, the 2022 season turned around quickly as the Warriors went undefeated in the region and took home a region title for the third consecutive time.

The Warriors will look to repeat that success with a region win over Deerfield-Windsor.
