THOMASVILLE — 22 years after the one of the deadliest attacks on US soil, the sting and significance of 9/11 has not left the minds of the American people. On September 11, communities all over the country will honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack.

The Thomasville YMCA will do its part to honor the first responders who fell in service of their community. They will host the Thomasville community at the Jacket’s Nest Stadium where volunteers will climb the steps of the stands simulating the climbing of 110 stories, the number of stories in the World Trade Center. This stair climb will be a tribute to the 343 firefighters, 63 police officers, and eight emergency medical personnel who lost their lives in the attack.

“I just think it’s a way that our community can show patriotic support for the people that lost their lives in 9/11,” said Thomasville YMCA CEO Tome Everett. “The idea that as a community we want to continue to ‘never forget’ to keep that memory alive and well. This is a way that the community can get behind the idea that we don’t need to forget that it was a tragic day.”

There will be two stair climbing sessions beginning at 5:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. There is a $20 pre-registration fee to guarantee a t-shirt and children ages ten and under get in free.

The event will not only include the stair climb, but will involve a number of moments of silence during the times each tower was hit as well as the moment other flights crashed and when the towers fell.
