THOMASVILLE- A group of community volunteers recently helped deliver dictionaries to students at Cross Creek Elementary School. The volunteers, who represented Thomasville Community Development Corporations, Hands on Thomas County, Rotary, Thomasville National Bank, Thomas County Public Library, Veterans Administration and Thomas County Schools, delivered a brief lesson on the importance of literacy before providing each student with a dictionary.
“We are committed to supporting literacy in our community,” said Katie Chastain, a volunteer from Thomasville Community Development Corporation. “Dictionaries are an essential tool for learning and we are pleased to be able to provide them to these students.”
Literacy For Thomas County, a non-profit organization that supports literacy in the county, coordinated the dictionary distribution. The organization’s mission is to “foster a well-rounded community by promoting and supporting literacy.”
“We are grateful to the community volunteers who helped with this project,” said Melvin Hugans, Chairman of Literacy For Thomas County. “Their efforts will help ensure that these students have the resources they need to succeed in school.”
The dictionary distribution is just one of the many ways that community volunteers are supporting literacy in Thomas County. Other initiatives include parent literacy programs, book distribution, and reading events.
