THOMASVILLE – Thomasville’s season-opening win over Brooks County on Friday showed the Bulldogs potential for the upcoming season.

The Bulldogs flattened Brooks County 42-20, led by an offense that tallied more than 500 yards. Thomasville’s physicality on offense and defense highlighted its sixth straight win in the regular season, said head coach Jonathan DeLay.

“The offense, we challenged our guys that we’ve got to run the football. That was the first thing I wrote, we’ve got to run the daggum ball in order to win this game, and we did,” DeLay said. “We had to be 100% in screens and RPOs (run-pass options), and I think we were pretty close. Then we had to get our shots, and we got them. We made some big plays down the field.

“Defensively, we gave up some drives in the first half, bowed our neck a couple of times, got a turnover, gave up 13 and then gave up 7 in the second half. We really challenged them to be physical and go out there and tackle. I thought they fought well in the second half.”

The Bulldogs used a balanced attack to bully Brooks County’s stout defense. Quarterback Cam Hill threw for 249 yards and one touchdown, while Thomasville’s quartet of running backs paced a rushing attack that churned out 273 yards. Lavonte Cole rushed for 89 yards and one touchdown. Ant Anderson rushed for 62 yards, while Leelend Champman added 72, and Jay Randall tallied two touchdowns.

Thomasville scored on its first four drives in the first half, led 28-13 at halftime and were never threatened after intermission.

“It goes to the kids. All week, they did the little things right, from how they showed up Sunday to the meetings to how they approached practice and how they approached meet time during the weight room. It paid off,” DeLay said. “I hope they understand, from last week to this week, we had to do the little things right, and that’s what it takes to win a game.”

Thomasville defensive back Tyreek Williams recorded an interception for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs will stay in town next week when they travel to Thomas County Central.
