CAIRO – Sam Holland’s return to South Georgia means he’ll get to see some former players and colleagues at Friday night’s Thomas County Central-Cairo football game. Only this time, he’ll be on the sideline of the home team Syrupmakers when the Yellow Jackets visit for the regular season opener.

Holland, who coached at Central for 13 years, six of which included a stint as athletic director, now serves as Cairo’s AD and talked about the reunion that will transpire Friday night in Cairo.

“It will be really nice to see a lot of the folks that I worked with,” Holland said. “Any time you play anybody on Highway 84, it’s going to be exciting. We are all blessed to be a part of this.”

Holland returned to South Georgia last spring following two seasons as football coach at DeSoto County in South Florida. He discussed being back in the Thomasville-Cairo area.

“It’s amazing. Somebody like me shouldn’t be blessed the way I’ve been,” Holland said. “I love coming to work every morning. I can’t wait to get to work. I’m surrounded by some phenomenal coaches and administrators. You can go anywhere in the state of Georgia, North Florida as well, and mention anything about Cairo athletics and instantly folks know all about it. To be a part of the history, what an honor to be a part of all that goes on here.”

Holland previously served as an offensive coordinator and running backs coach for the Yellow Jackets.

CAIRO LOSES SCRIMMAGE

Cairo dropped its preseason scrimmage last Friday 46-7 to Ware County, the defending state champion in Class 5-A. The varsity teams played the first three quarters before the junior varsity played the final period.

Ware County led 33-7 at halftime. Cairo’s only touchdown came on a throw from quarterback Juderek Gee-simmons to Amari Powell.
