The law of human nature

C. S. Lewis was a brilliant atheist who, like so many others, set out to disprove the existence of God. and like many of the other atheists, he became a staunch Christian. He made many radio talks during WWI and later gathered them into one of the, in my opinion, best little books ever written, Mere Christianity.

In his radio talks, and later book, Lewis masterfully explains the fundament basis of belief in Christianity. He begins by stating that everyone has a knowledge or feeling of what is right and what is wrong. He calls this the Law of Human Nature or the Moral Law. He says it is revealed whenever anyone says things such as, “That’s not fair” or “You promised.” The one who makes such statements is appealing to a standard of behavior which he expects his adversary to know. The argument against belief in God is often all the evil and cruelty in the world. But, Lewis asks, how did the atheists get the idea of just and cruel?

This Law of Human Nature is universal. All people have felt they should behave in certain ways. Yet all people have failed to practice what they expect from others. No one can break the law of gravity, for example, but the Moral Law anyone can and does break. But it is still a real law that people did not invent and all know they should obey. So there must be a something behind this law.

The something seems more like a mind than anything else. So we conclude that the something is actually a Somebody. We know two things about this Somebody. One is that He created the universe. The other is that He put this Moral Law into our minds. Of course, as you may have already guessed, this Somebody is the Lord God Almighty.

Lewis goes on to explain that God is our only ally and that we have made ourselves His enemy. But fortunately for us, God Himself became a man to save man from God’s disapproval. This man of course is the Son of God, and God Himself as part of the Trinity (God the Son). His name is Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ.

There once was a brilliant and beautiful angel in heaven named Lucifer. But, as the Bible states, pride was found in him. He wanted to be God. The Word of God (the Bible) tells us, speaking of him, “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart:I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High. Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit‘” (Isaiah 14:12-15). Lucifer was removed from heaven and became Satan, the devil. and he has continually caused misery and suffering to all people ever since.

We are all so fortunate in that God is a loving Father to all who believe in and trust their souls to Christ. These we call Christians, and when God looks on us (Christians), He does not see our old evil nature, which still exists in all of us. He sees instead the righteousness that Christ has imputed to all who receive Him as Savior. Romans 10:13 promises, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”’
