Thomasville Chapter DAR celebrates 111th birthday

THOMASVILLE- The Thomasville Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) celebrated its 111th birthday with dinner at The Plaza Restaurant on July 20 with chapter members and prospective members in attendance. The Thomasville Chapter, NSDAR was organized as the Ochlocknee Chapter on July 19, 1912.

The name was changed to the Thomasville Chapter in 1928. There were 21 charter members of the Thomasville Chapter and Blanche Tarwater Merrill was the chapter’s Organizing Regent. There are currently 110 members in the Thomasville Chapter DAR.

Thomasville Chapter DAR Regent Shelba Sellers greeted everyone in attendance. Thomasville Chapter members Marcianne Benton and Theresa Brown also spoke about their Revolutionary War ancestors. Benton’s patriot ancestor is Abraham Maury, who provided patriotic service in Virginia and Brown’s patriot ancestor is Pvt. Francis Berry, who served in Virginia during the Revolutionary War. After dinner, attendees enjoyed cake to celebrate the 111th birthday of the Thomasville Chapter, NSDAR. Several chapter members in attendance were also celebrating July birthdays.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With nearly 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations.
