- LET’S SET A RECORD: Participants are asked to dress in black, brown or tan from head to toe, wear antennas and wings.
THOMASVILLE — A World Record Re-Attempt is underway in Thomasville.
Planned for Friday, May 12 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Ritz Amphitheater in Downtown Thomasville, participants will attempt to break the record for the “Largest Group of People Dressed Like a Butterfly.” Record organizers are confident they can break the record.

“The current world record is 367 people. We know we’re a small town, but we have a HUGE heart,” said event organizer Alexandria English, a program director with Vashti Center. “Please join us and help us smash the record! Every single person counts!”
The World Record Attempt helps Vashti Center raise awareness for Children’s Mental Health week in the second week of May, as well as Mental Health Awareness month throughout the entire month of May.
The butterfly is Vashti’s organization logo, and it stands for transformation & hope, much like their mission statement. This is what they strive to provide the children and families they serve in each of their programs.
“Last year, the Vashti Center set a goal to break the world record and we came very close to breaking it,” said English.
“Unfortunately, bad weather and a last minute tornado watch kept most people away, but even in spite of the rain, we came very close to beating the record. I am confident we will break it this year!”
Strict costume guidelines require participants to wear a long sleeve shirt & pants in a single color of black, brown, or tan head-to-toe, wearing butterfly wings attached at the back, and an antennae on their head.

Wings and antennas can be purchased online at sites like Amazon.com, or participants can make their own. Local super hero and cape maker Everfan is also offering a custom butterfly cape for the event, available on their website at Everfan.com. All proceeds benefit Vashti. The event is free, but organizers are requesting that people register in advance so they know how many to expect. Those interested can register by visiting Vashti.org/world-record.
