Philosophy and empty deceit

The Apostle Paul warned the Colossians, “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ” (Col. 2:8). This is exactly what is taking place today in our colleges and universities. These institutions of “higher learning” are loaded up with atheistic professors that challenge the beliefs of their young students. The saved among the students will either challenge their professors or, more likely, keep quiet and remain unaffected. That is perhaps the wisest course, since these fools (Psalm 14:1) have hearts much too hardened to condescend to what a lowly student might believe.
In 1 Timothy 6:3-5, Paul said, “If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.” We are not to dispute with such people or even have anything to do with them. If anything, simply proclaim to them the Gospel of Christ and be done speaking. Besides, as Dale Carnegie said, we can never win an argument. and keep in mind that only the Holy Spirit can persuade a soul to repent and be saved. Our job is to simply present the Gospel.
I believe that philosophy is not only ungodly but also foolish and a total waste of time. Proverbs 3:5 advises us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” Why? We have very little understanding, especially of things of God. Our Father in heaven will explain some things to us, but He is never obligated to explain anything to anyone. Some things are not our business to understand. Even some physical phenomena on earth are quite beyond our intellectual capacity. A good example is gravity, the pulling together of any two objects in the universe. We understand that it never fails, but we have absolutely no idea why it should be. We know a lot about universal gravitation. Isaac Newton worked out a mathematical formula to calculate the force of attraction. But why gravity should be is quite a mystery. I rather think it will always be inexplicable on earth. I also believe that the fact of physical things on earth that we are incapable of understanding helps people to believe in God. It helps me. I believe God put things beyond our understanding to demonstrate that we are not all-wise as He is. I think it is one of the ways God uses to keep us humble. Of course there are intelligent people foolish enough to think they should be able to understand anything with enough information. But the great mental power of Albert Einstein could never explain gravity, though he spent thirty years calculating and trying to do so.
My advice to young and old alike is to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and call on Him for salvation. and do it while you are alive and have the chance. Your chance will end the moment of your death.
