THOMASVILLE — When Doug Williams Jr. moved to Thomasville with his wife and kids in 2017, he was looking forward to watching his kids play Little League. But, after searching for a team in the area, Williams found that there wasn’t one. Now, as president of the Southwest Georgia Little League, Williams is giving kids a chance to compete on the national stage for the Little League World Series.

Williams is from Warner Robins where little leaguers stand tall. He can recall watching future Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm dominate in the Little League World Series as he and Warner Robins went on to win the title in 2007. So, when it was time for his kids to join the ranks of Little Leaguers around the nation, Williams wasn’t going to let the lack of a team stop him.

This is the first year for the Southwest Georgia Little League and it’s doing just what it was designed to do.

“Little League is all about development,” said Williams. “It’s just a growth that’s really cool to see and to be a part of that is really cool.”

Baseball is all about growth and developing new skills every day. It’s something that Williams loves to see in his players.

“It’s just really cool to see a four or five year old go from hitting off a tee and picking flowers and chasing butterflies to hitting home runs.”

The ultimate goal of the Southwest Georgia Little League is to have kids from the Thomasville area represent Georgia in the Little League World Series. However, it is a long road. After their inaugural season, the Southwest Georgia Little League will take a team of all-stars to Columbus where they will play in a regional tournament. If they win, they will move on to the state tournament. After that, dreams will become reality in the Little League World Series.

The Southwest Georgia Little League will host their next game on Tuesday April 25 in Boston, Ga. at the Boston Sports Complex at 6:30.
