GETTING A FEEL FOR MARINE LIFE: Hands-on lessons in fish dissection, slough study and surf fishing taught students about the beach and marsh. Teal West notes these areas to be homes of horseshoe crabs.

THOMASVILLE — Brookwood School’s seventh graders traveled to the University of Georgia 4-H center at Jekyll Island for their annual trip last week.

This trip allows students to focus on the many different ecosystems that exist in their home state.

Activities such as salt marsh ecology, dissection, maritime forest ecology, beach ecology, and herpetology provided the class with ample opportunities to increase environmental awareness and connect with nature.

“This trip is both educational and fun,” said Middle School science teacher Amanda Hanke.

“Notably, seventh graders enjoyed a boat tour of the intracoastal waterway this year. They got to learn about shrimping and see many marine animals that were picked up by the shrimping nets.”
