THOMASVILLE — The Board of Directors of the Tommy Griffin Music Scholarship are proud to announce a partnership with Thomasville’s “Families for a CURE” childhood cancer group for this years ‘Concert for Tommy’ event.
The last two years, the annual “Concert for Tommy” fundraiser has raised over $30,000 to establish funding for the Tommy Griffin Music Scholarship, awarded to deserving high school seniors who are interested in pursuing music or audio/video production in college. The scholarship is named in honor of local musician and music producer Tommy Griffin, who passed away in 2020.}
“The concerts have been very successful in getting the scholarship fund on solid ground,” said Kam Griffin, Chairman of the Scholarship Board and daughter of Tommy Griffin. “So much so it just didn’t feel right to continue piling on to it financially when there are so many charitable needs here locally. We decided as a group we wanted to partner with a deserving charitable organization, and ‘Families for a CURE’ is a perfect choice.”
Griffin noted that the plan is to use the funds raised with this year’s event to refurbish the scholarship fund and then take the remaining funds and contribute it to the local group. “Families for a CURE” have been in existence in Thomas County since 2010, created to locally raise funds to support the national CURE Childhood Cancer organization.
“Families for a CURE” is looking forward to expanding our fundraising efforts and being a part of this event working with the “Concert for Tommy” scholarship board,” stated organization member Sharon Johnson. “Personally, as one of Tommy’s friends, I think he would be pleased with our joint effort. Tommy had a generous and tender heart of gold.”
“Every single family in Thomas County has been affected by childhood cancer in some way,” added scholarship spokesman Randy Young. “I know as a teacher I’ve had at least a half dozen young people in my classes that have battled cancer over the years, and then there are families that I am friends with that have fought it as well. We have several young people and their families locally currently battling it right now.”
The ‘Concert for Tommy’ this year is scheduled to take place at the Thomasville Fairgrounds onJuly 29 and will feature Nashville recording artist and Thomasville native Hannah Wright with her band ‘The Midnight Revelry’, long time Thomasville favorites ‘The Skinks’, and regional sensation 80’s tribute band ‘The Rock Mob’. All proceeds will be utilized by the scholarship fund and “Families for a CURE.”
