THOMASVILLE — The Thomas County Central Esports team competed in the first round of the Rocket League playoffs on Monday. The Yellow Jackets defeated West Laurens High, sweeping the Raiders four games to none.

The Yellow Jackets have done very well this season as the Rocket League team raced into the playoffs ranked #20.

“They’re pretty excited,” said Coach Mark Thompson. “They worked really hard this year.”

In the best of seven series, the Yellow Jackets took care of business. After sweeping West Laurens High, Central will head to the second round of the playoffs where they will meet #12 ranked Dalton High School.

The Yellow Jackets Esports team has been a part of Thomas County Central for five years now, providing an opportunity for students to compete in something they love.

“We wanted to add a program for the kids who don’t participate in athletics,” said Thompson.

The Rocket League squad is not the only team who has performed well this year. The Yellow Jackets Super Smash Bros team finished ranked #22 and the Mario Kart team sits at an impressive #3 in the state. That highly ranked Mario Kart team will begin their playoff run on Thursday.
