THOMASVILLE — The Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets finished their season on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Ware County last Friday. The non-conference battle took place on Ware County’s home turf and Head Coach Tony Voyles was very proud of his team’s away win.
“We went over there to their field and played well,” he said. “They are a super athletic team and we played that very well. It was a solid win going into the playoffs.”
The victory over the Gators capped off a successful season for the Yellow Jackets. They finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-5-1. Central’s regional record of 6-4 slotted them at third place in the region and secured a playoff berth. Voyles attributed this successful season to the play of the veterans and young players on this Yellow Jackets squad.
We have a very experienced team this year,” said Voyles. “We had a lot of young players who contributed.”
Ending the season on a two game win streak, the Yellow jackets are looking ahead to Guyton, Ga where they will take on South Effingham in the first round of the 6A playoffs. South Effingham has played extremely well the season, finishing 13-3-1 overall this season. The Mustangs are coming off a three game win streak and are looking to continue that streak into the playoffs. However, Voyles believes his team is a good match for the Mustangs.
“We’ve watched two or three games on them now and we feel like we match up really well against them,” he said.
Despite 13 wins this season, South Effingham has not scored at a high rate this season. They only scored more than three goals once this season in a 4-2 win over Lakeside. Therefore, goal keeping is something the Yellow Jackets will have to lean on against the Mustangs.
“Goal keeping for us has been pretty strong this year,” said Voyles. “They’ve made some great saves and have gotten us out of some spots this season.”
The Yellow Jackets first round playoff game will take place on Friday at 6:00 pm in Guyton, Ga.
