Songs that preach

I love the “old songs” that we grew up singing in the Baptist church. The main reason is that they preach their own sermons to all who pay attention to their words. One of my favorite songs asks, “Are you washed in the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb?” This is no doubt the single most important question anyone could ever be asked. and that is because being washed in the blood of God’s Lamb is the single most important thing a person can ever experience on earth.
This song also asks if you’ve been to Jesus for the cleansing power. Christ said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me.” Another wonderful question in this song is, “Do you rest each moment in the Crucified?” Christ is the only rest we have available on earth. We can be at constant rest in Him alone. This world is rough and hard and full of people that are greedy and evil. We all need a source of purification and rest.
It is so sad how many people, especially men, do not want to be labeled “religious.” They consider the remark, “He’s got religion” to be most derogatory. But the truth is that Christianity is not a religion and never has been.
Being a Christian means having a relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Anytime you hear someone say, “I’m not very religious,” you have found an unbeliever and someone God expects you, as a Christian, to witness to for Christ. Witnessing for the Lord is every Christian’s job. The Gospel is news that is too good to be kept secret. It gets people to heaven instead of hell.
Another famous song says, “Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” Grace is defined as unmerited favor from God. It shows how much God loves man in spite of man’s evil and rebellious nature toward God. Through grace God is giving us not what we deserve, but what we need. But we must believe in Christ, that He is God’s Son and, as part of the Trinity, God Himself. and each one to whom God bestows His grace must repent. This means leaving a sinful lifestyle and turning to and calling on Christ to save him. Romans 10:13 promises, “For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Tragically, Satan has persuaded most people that the Gospel is all myth. He’s done this through television, Hollywood, and all forms of media. And, too, he gets too many people to procrastinate making a decision for Christ. What people don’t realize is that they only have this life to trust Christ and thus qualify for heaven. After one dies, he loses all opportunity to ever see heaven.
Back in December of 2022, our church lost a very good man and deacon. As he lay in the hospital bed, he was confident where his soul was headed. At the last, he folded his hands and announced that he was going to heaven. I have no doubt whatsoever that he is in heaven today. Friends, don’t put off the most important thing you can ever do on earth. Trust Christ today!
