Ms. Harrop’s problem with Nikki Haley lies beyond her shoes

If the headline alone wasn’t enough to tip me off to the mindset of the author, the ensuing paragraphs made it definitively clear that Ms. Harrop has less of a problem with Nikki Haley’s shoes than she does with her politics.
To criticize a person from refraining to dive into the overplayed hand of hating Donald Trump for being Donald Trump is both tiresome and transparent. Apparently, if you don’t agree to attack the former President in your effort to deserve election, you must support an insurrection (by anyone’s definition). And, if that’s the case, Ms. Harrop “doesn’t care” about you or anything you have to offer. She’s “done” which, in my view, sounds a bit sophomoric. Never mind the truly violent insurrections that did millions of dollars of damage to our cities under the guise of peaceful protests.
I submit to Ms. Harrop that she didn’t care what Nikki Haley had to say long before Ms. Haley announced her bid for the White House. She was just using the point of her pen to pick on the pretty, smart girl she never liked in high school. In case it went unnoticed by Ms. Harrop, we stopped criticizing women for what they choose to wear when we stopped suggesting they asked to be raped because they wore skirts above their knees. We enlightened folk don’t attack based on appearance or whether or not someone is wearing a hoodie or a hijab.
Choosing to distinguish yourself from an opponent by refusing to attack them is not blank; it’s smart. Most of us “don’t care” to hear what any political candidate doesn’t like about their opponent. Most of us do not like attacks, on either side. Tell us what you can do, what you want to do and why we should believe you can do it.
Judging by Nikki Haley’s performance as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, and as the Governor of South Carolina, most would say she has sufficiently demonstrated she is articulate, informed, principled and, frankly, brave. She has evidenced how she is different from Mr. Trump, Mr. Obama, Mr. Bush, Mr. Biden – – or pretty much any Mister you want to bring up. And sitting in those hot seats, she showed no concern about being able to run in her high heels. Look at her now – – she’s running for President in them!
Yes, Ms. Harrop, you did hiss at Nikki’s Party shoes. They are on the feet of a Republican. And the vapid premise you presented in Saturday’s paper as reason for any of us to doubt her capabilities was enough to make me turn on my pointy-toed high heels and seek a more intellectual writer to read.
Sincerely,
