Humane Society no longer “open admission” shelter

THOMASVILLE- The Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society was unable to reach an agreement with the Thomas County Board of Commissioners, thus not renewing their contract for 2023.

According to Executive Director Chandler Giddes, the Humane Society will continue to operate as a private non-profit, serving the Thomas County community, as well as parts of Southwest Georgia. However, they are transitioning from an “open-admission” shelter to a “limited admission” shelter.

The Humane Society reported “open-admission” typically means the shelter takes in any animal in need, including very elderly, ill, aggressive or injured animals that may not be able to be rehomed.

Limited admission shelters usually accept only selected animals that they feel maximize their unique skill. Therefore, the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society will focus specifically on highly adoptable animals they can rehome quickly. Aggressive, ill and elderly animals will no longer be accepted.

Giddes shared the Humane Society will still require an appointment for owner surrenders. If they are not able to take the animal during the appointment, the owner will be required to rethink their decision at their own discretion.

Giddes also explained they will no longer be impounding stray dogs or cats. In the event a stray animal is found and is not dangerous or showing signs of rabies, the finder can choose to keep the animal or leave it to its own devices.

This does not mean the Humane Society does not still care for animals, as they will continue to adopt animals, provide medical care for newly adopted pets and provide low cost sterilization services with their “Wellness Waggin” mobile veterinary bus.

In addition, the Humane Society hopes to continue to provide community outreach through events, such as the upcoming Tails and Trails, along with providing an educational impact regarding the humane ownership of pets through their various partnerships in Thomas County and beyond.  For specific questions regarding owner surrenders or further information, contact the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society.
