Last Monday, the Cairo City Council met at a regular council meeting to discuss and approve various proposals and special events put forth by the city and public.
Amongst the proposals considered, the council discussed the upcoming end of contract with Taylor Waste, considering their next 5-year solid waste management contract between two services, Taylor Waste and Waste Pro, USA.
“On July 14, we accepted proposals for solid waste, we did have two proposals submitted,” Julian Brown, city manager, said, “One was from our current service company, Taylor Waste, and the second was from Waste Pro.”
After listening to representatives of both service, no decision was reached, with further consideration and research required by the council.
A proposal purchasing two zero-turn lawnmowers for the Community Service Department of Cairo was considered, with a motion eventually passing to amend the purchase amount and buying a total of three for $26,243.13.
Additionally, of the proposals, an application for a new alcoholic beverage license from First and Broad Pizza Company, allowing retail consumption on premises, in reference to beer and wine, was considered and approved.
The owner, Karen Holder, said that the approval paved the way for getting a state-level alcohol license, allowing them to properly and legally sell alcohol once their business opened in downtown Cairo.
“We’re still working on the state,” she said. “You have to submit, like, you have to have your local permit number before you can submit to the state and then you go through the Georgia Tax Center, uh, to get your permit with the state. We have a permit now, but it’s under Home Slice, and since we’re changing the name, we have to redo everything.”
Amongst the special events, Andrea Lynn and Silvia Salgado of the Mission Vision Foundation’s permit for a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration parade on Sept. 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. was approved.
