THOMASVILLE — With a mission to feed the hungry of Thomasville, the Building the House of Faith with Faith Soup Kitchen is opening up on 1332 West Jackson St.

According to Reverend Dr. Daniel Joseph Brown Sr., the soup kitchen will operate from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

“You can come, you can eat, you can pick up a plate,” he said, “And it don’t cost you nothing.”

Dr. Brown said that the opening was somewhat of a re-opening, referring to Earlean Douglas’s involvement in the soup kitchen. Douglas was involved in the Rescue Mission Soup Kitchen, a previous soup kitchen in the Thomasville area that closed a few years ago.

“We’re doing the same thing we’ve been doing, always been doing,” Dr. Brown said, “Feeding the poor, amen, feeding those in need, amen, feeding the hungry, amen. We do this because this is what God has commanded for his children to do on Earth.”

He said that the soup kitchen would provide food for the local hungry, from spaghetti to northern beans and rice.

“All of the food is good food,” he said.

With all of their paperwork in order and the construction of the soup kitchen completed, Dr. Brown said that they would be having a grand opening on May 20. Hamburgers, hot dogs and spare ribs will be provided along with live music.

The need for the soup kitchen, according to Dr. Brown, could not be ignored.

“The need for a soup kitchen is that because people are hungry,” he said, “They may not say it, but a lot of people are hungry.”

According to the minister, the area has many mouths to feed, pointing to the hundreds fed daily by Rescue Mission Soup Kitchen in the past and how recent events have only elevated the growing issue.

“At our last soup kitchen, we were feeding a couple hundred people a day,” he said, “So, I believe it’ll be more.”

Dr. Brown said that the soup kitchen worked with and was supported by local churches in the area, such as Dawson Street Baptist Church, and Second Harvest, a non-profit charity that seeks to end hunger in south Georgia.
