World Series Trophy to be in Cairo
The World Series champion Atlanta Braves will be bringing the World Series trophy to Cairo on Jackie Robinson Day as part of the tour of the trophy around the state. The trophy will be on display at the Jackie Robison Boys and Girls Club on Friday, April 15 with an outdoor public event planned for that afternoon from 4-7 p.m. Members of the local Boys and Girls Club will be attending a Braves game on April 22 at Truist Park in Atlanta where they will sing the National Anthem before the game. This will be a major fundraiser for the club as $4 from each ticket purchased for the game will be donated to the Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club.
Teen Thursday at Library
The Roddenbery Memorial Library invites all area teens to join them for Teen Thursday, each Thursday in the teen room at 3:30 p.m. for fun, activities, games and snacks. The special program is open for all youth, ages 12 and up.
Cairo High Class of ’72 to have Reunion
The Cairo High School Class of 1972 will be having its 50th class reunion on October 21-22. State Park Road and boat ramp closed
The Grady County Board of Commissioners are continuing to make improvements at Tired Creek Lake and have announced that during these improvements, the State Park Road leading to the lake and the main boat ramp will be temporarily closed as the road that leads down to the ramp is paved. The ramps at Cedar Springs East and West remain open for those who wish to continue to use the lake.
Entries accepted for annual Jackie Robinson Essay Contest
The Jackie Robinson Cairo Memorial Institute is currently asking all local eighth graders to enter the 20th annual essay contest to win prize money and preserve Jackie Robinson’s legacy. The contest is open to all eighth graders who are asked to submit a typed essay of 300 words or less on the subject, “How has the life of Jackie Robinson made an impact on your life?” The deadline to submit essays is April 7 and must include a cover page with the student’s name, mailing address, phone number, parent or guardian’s name and the school they attend. Annual Women in the Workforce Luncheon coming
The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce and First National Bank in Cairo will be sponsoring the Annual Women in the Workforce luncheon on Tuesday, April 26 at Davis Park behind the Roddenbery Memorial Library. The event will feature lunch, a featured inspirational speaker and door prizes and tickets are $15 per person. For more information, call the Chamber of Commerce at 377-3663.
Tax assessor reminds residents of tax exemptions deadline
The Grady County Tax Assessors Office reminds all residents of the April 1 deadline to sign up for Homestead Exemption, Conservation, Preferential or Forest Land Protection tax exemption status. Detailed information about each of these exemptions may be obtained by visiting the Tax Assessors office located at 114 1st Street, NE in Cairo.
Antique Car Rally to Return in May
The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce has announced the 34th Great Southern Antique Car Rally will be returning to Cairo from May 13-14. The car rally attracts antique car enthusiasts and spectators from all of the Southeastern U.S. and will feature a gaslight parade, poker run and display of cars. More details will be coming soon from the Chamber of Commerce.
