THOMASVILLE — The Thomasville City Schools system is looking at ways to bolster how well its students read and write.

Superintendent Dr. Raymond Bryant Jr. told board members of plans to make sure city schools students are reading and writing at grade level.

“Thomasville City Schools has embarked upon what I believe is its most important and comprehensive journey, perhaps in its history and that’s in the development of a Thomasville City Schools system of literacy vision, literacy beliefs and literacy framework,” he said.

The city schools system has partnered with Thomas County Library System for what is known as a PLAY (PINES Library Access to Youth) card, giving students the ability to check out up to five books and other materials.

Also in conjunction with the library, the city schools will begin a series of pop-up libraries. The first is set for March 9 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Villa North apartments.

The idea, Dr. Bryant said, is to bring the library to meet the students.

“One of the things I recognize is we have to continue to remove barriers for our students so they can fully engage in their education,” he said.

“I am beyond ecstatic for what this potentially means for our students. This partnership has elicited a concerted effort to support our students in ensuring that all of them are proficient readers and writers on grade level.”

Dr. Bryant said this is the first of several ways to buttress literacy among city schools students. Plans also call for more pop-up libraries within the city.

“We are excited about this partnership. This is just the beginning,” he said. “We have a lot of good things we’re planning. This is what it’s going to take to ensure all our students are proficient readers and writers at grade level.”
