THOMASVILLE – The Thomasville Lady Bulldogs earned a Region 1-AA championship last Friday, were well-represented on the all-region team and are ready to conquer state.
The first step to a state championship occurs Tuesday night when Thomasville (19-7) hosts Lamar County in the first round of the state tournament.
Thomasville head coach Jeray Randall stresses the importance of his team taking each game one game at a time.
“Whatever we do, we do it all together and take one quarter at a time. That’s the main focus, that we try to win every quarter,” Randall said. “Game by game, we’ve just got to stay focused every day; practice, school, even at home. Be focused on what you’re trying to accomplish.”
Thomasville’s focus last week was conquering the region tournament which it did emphatically. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Berrien 49-36 in the semifinals and then crushed Early County 42-21 in the region championship game. Thomasville enters the state playoffs having won eight of its last nine.
“They started clicking right here together at the right point. We’re starting to peak,” Randall said. “There’s still room to go and to grow. We just need to continue to focus on getting better at the skill set.
“They’re ready to play, ready to go out and get this win; just continue to roll what we’re doing.”
The winner will play the winner of Haralson County-Chattooga in the second round.
Thomasville’s successful run in the regular season and region tournament yielded a positive return on the all-region team, including senior Herbreyia Diggs being named region player of the year and Randall being named coach of the year.
Thomasville’s selections on the all-region first team include senior Sanaa White and junior Laila Harvey. Its second team selections include junior Rakiyah McQueen, freshman Raniyah Wilson and sophomore Jabria Richardson. Thomasville’s honorable mention selections include sophomore Kayundria Bush and sophomore Dallas Hill.
