THOMASVILLE – Former Thomas County Central track and field and football standout Nick Dodson continues his outstanding coaching career for the Southeastern University track and field team.
Dodson was named the Sun Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year, as both of his teams captured the 2022 Indoor Conference championships on Monday.
“We had our conference championship up in Birmingham, Alabama. Last year we won that inaugural indoor title, and this year they actually did it indoor up in Birmingham. Both the men and the women won again. We were pretty proud of that and progressing towards the team national championship because we’ve got a great shot at that,” Dodson said.
Thomas County Central Stadium was the site of the inaugural Sun Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships in 2021.
Dodson has established the Fire track and field program as a national contender in NAIA in just a short time, arriving in 2018. It is not Dodson’s first award but one he will always cherish.
“This (award) is definitely memorable because we wanted to have indoor track and field in our conference. Myself along with the committee fought to get that. We got the ADs on board and the commissioner. Now we have it,” Dodson said. “Just looking at being able to start this program a few years ago and where we are right now, we’ve won every conference championship we’ve been in; indoor and outdoor, since the existence of the program. We’ve done it with a different team. That’s what makes it so unique and pretty cool. Each (award) is always special to me. They don’t get old. I enjoy it because of the impact we have with the student athletes.”
