THOMASVILLE — The GISA Region 3-AAA champions are streaking into the playoffs with five straight wins. But the Brookwood Warriors will have to wait a week to begin their postseason trek to a championship.

Brookwood is off this week before starting the playoffs next week as the No. 6 seed against Westfield, the No. 3 seed.

“I think probably the six teams that earned the bye are probably all excited about it. The easy part is you get a week to get your legs back, probably a few less bruises at the very least,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “We’re going to use it to polish. I think there will be an element of game-planning in there because we do know who we’re playing. There will also be an element of cleaning up mistakes, just trying to create some polish on both sides of the ball.”

Brookwood has won five straight following a six-game losing streak to start the season. The Warriors have prevailed in dramatic and dominant fashion. The Warriors rallied past Southland Academy 16-15 last week behind a last-minute touchdown toss from Rodge Waldrop to Strong Beverly. That followed a thrilling 29-22 comeback victory over Tiftarea Academy two weeks prior after trailing 14-0 at halftime.

It is quite the turnaround for a team that didn’t notch a win until the second week in October.

“Our kids, literally six weeks ago, sitting out there after another loss and you’re sitting there trying to keep your eyes on a dream of playing better football and playing good enough football to go ahead and win the region,” Boggs said. “I’m proud of the fact that we’ve started to create habits that not just position yourself to win games but finish games. In the last five weeks, three of those five have certainly come down to the last drive of the game.

“To have to come back from inside of two minutes two of the last three weeks says a lot about our guys and how they’ve persevered and keep fighting. We’re very excited about that.”
