Red Ribbon Week being celebrated
Drug Free Grady is being celebrated October 25-29 in Cairo with various activities throughout the week. Wednesday is Prayer Day and everyone is asked to come together at the noon at the Grady County Courthouse to pray. Thursday is Share Day and everyone is asked to please share a Red Ribbon with someone as a reminder to be ‘Drug Free Like Me.’ And Friday will be Sports Day and everyone is encouraged to wear red and black to school and work.
Christmas Parade is December 2
The Cairo Christmas Parade will be held on Thursday, Dec, 2 starting at 7 p.m. with this year’s theme being “Christmas in Grady Land” which is a variation on the popular children’s board game, Candyland. If you would like to have an entry in this year’s parade, call the chamber of commerce at 229-377-3663.
Elevate Artisan Market is this weekend
The 5th annual Elevate Artisan Market will be coming to Cairo on Saturday, October 30 to Maisie Daze Fleecery and Summerhill Farms, located at 644 Hall Road from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Over 160 talented artists and craftspeople from throughout the Southeast will be on hand to display and sell their art and handcrafted merchandise. In addition, there will be food artisans with handcrafted, specialty food, beverages and desserts featured during the market. Admission is only $3 per vehicle with plenty of parking just a few steps from the event, which is held under the shade of a large pecan orchard. Everyone who loves great art and meeting creative people are encouraged to attend.
Last week for early voting
Early voting for the City of Cairo election is currently going on through this Friday, Oct. 29. This election will only feature the candidates for mayor, incumbent Howard Thrower and the former mayor, Booker T. Gainor. If you wish to vote early, you can do so weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Grady County Courthouse. Voting will be held on Tuesday, November 2 at the Agri-Center for those who chose not to cast an early ballot.
Boo on Broad returns to downtown
After taking a year off due to the pandemic, the annual Boo on Broad event will be returning to downtown Cairo this Friday, October 29 from 3-5:30 p.m. Children 12 and under are encouraged to dress in their favorite costumes and visit the downtown stores and shops where they can receive candy and plenty of fun. There will also be a costume contest at 5 p.m. so everyone is encouraged to wear their best Halloween costume and join the fun.
Art After School program available
The Roddenbery Memorial Library has started an ‘Art After School’ program for children ages 8-11 beginning this week. The program is held on Mondays at 4 p.m. and is free, but registration is required. Registration forms are available online at rmlibrary.org and also on the library’s Facebook page.
Flu shots available
The Grady County Health Department has received shipments of the flu vaccine for the coming flu season and are recommending that local citizens receive them as soon as possible. Getting the flu shot before the end of October gives it a chance to reach full effectiveness before flu season reaches its full peak. The cost per dose is $30 but the health department will file insurance and most patients will not incur any out-of-pocket expense. For more information, contact the Grady County Health Department.
Storytime is back at library
The Roddenbery Memorial Library officials have announced their popular Children’s Storytime is starting back on a new day! Join them every Thursday at 11 a.m. for a story followed by a cool craft you can take home. Children’s Storytime is for children ages 3 – 5.
Grady EMC seeks to verify addresses
If you were a member of Grady EMC during the years of 1955-1972, you may be eligible for a Capital Credit refund check. The local utility co-op is seeking past members who are no longer Grady EMC members or have moved to different addresses in order to send notices for the refunds and verify current mailing addresses. All former members or members who have moved to a new address should be on the lookout for a postcard from Grady EMC or for more information, call 377-4182.
Learn to paint with watercolors
The Roddenbery Memorial Library is offering Watercolor classes with Tom Hart every Tuesday at 4 p.m. These free classes are for ages 12 and up. Call the library for more information.
Deadline to order commemorative bricks
The Cairo High School Band members are raising money to purchase uniforms and currently selling engraved bricks that will be on permanent display as part of their fundraiser. The bricks are available in various sizes and can be engraved with both lettering and clipart. The deadline to order the bricks is November 3.
