Booster shots available to Grady residents
The Southwest Health District is now offering free COVID booster shots to residents in Grady County who have received the first full vaccinations. The Pfizer booster shots are available to people 65 years and older and residents of long-term care settings, people 50 to 74 with underlying medical conditions and people ages 18-49 with underlying health conditions or increased risk for contracting COVID-19 due to exposure through their occupation. Appointments to receive the booster can be made by calling the Grady County Health Department at 377-2992.
Storytime back at library on a new day
The Roddenbery Memorial Library has announced that its popular Children’s Storytime is starting back on a new day! Join them every Thursday at 11 a.m. for a story followed by a cool craft you can take home. Children’s Storytime is for children ages 3–5.
Chamber to sponsor golf tournament
The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce will be holding its 22nd annual Golf Classic on October 14 at the Tired Creek Golf Course. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place teams with prizes for the longest drive, closest to pin and hole-in-one. To register for the tournament, contact the chamber at 377-3663.
Grady EMC seeks to verify addresses for refund checks
If you were a member of Grady EMC during the years of 1955-1972, you may be eligible for a Capital Credit refund check. The local utility co-op is seeking past members who are no longer Grady EMC members or have moved to different addresses in order to send notices for the refunds and verify current mailing addresses. All former members or members who have moved to a new address should be on the lookout for a postcard from Grady EMC or for more information, call 377-4182.
Library offering Take & Make for Children
Beginning October 1, the Roddenbery Memorial Library invites all children to stop by the library each week to pick up your free Take & Make craft to go! Different crafts will be available for ages 0 to 4 and 5 to 11, limit one per child while supplies last.
Tickets on sale for Thomas University’s Casino Night
Thomas University and local alumni and Grady County businesses invite everyone to join together and help raise money for scholarships to benefit local students in our community during their annual ‘Casino Night: A Masquerade Dinner’ fundraising event to be held at the Grady Cultural Center on Saturday, October 16. The event will feature a silent and live auction for several items including a weekend trip to Lake Seminole, a Goldman Kobler bracelet, a wood carved American flag, tickets to an FSU football game and more. Tickets for the event are $50 for individuals and $75 for couples and can be purchased from any member of the Planning Committee or at the Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce, Cairo Chemical & Supply, Southern Promotions and Apparel and online at thomasu.edu/tickets/casinonight.
Learn to paint with watercolors
The Roddenbery Memorial Library is offering watercolor classes with Tom Hart every Tuesday at 4 p.m. These free classes are for ages 12 and up. Call the library for more information.
Deadline to order commemorative bricks from band is November 3
The Cairo High School Band is raising money to purchase uniforms and is currently selling engraved bricks that will be on permanent display as part of their fundraiser. The bricks are available in various sizes and can be engraved with both lettering and clipart. The deadline to order the bricks is November 3. Local officials continue vaccinations push
As cases of COVID continue to rise in our community, local government and health official are calling on all unvaccinated citizens in our community to get the vaccine as soon as possible. As of last week, Grady General Hospital was treating 49 COVID-positive patients of whom 47 were unvaccinated. Grady County lags behind neighboring communities with only 40% of residents having received at least one dose of the vaccine and 32% being considered fully vaccinated. Local officials are encouraging everyone to help stop the spread of the virus and consider getting the vaccine as soon as possible.
Al-Anon Chapter meets on Thursdays
Does someone close to you have a drinking or drug problem? Al-Anon Family Groups have one focus: to help friends and families of alcoholics. The local group meets on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the AA clubhouse, 3351 Hwy. 84, Cairo, GA 38828. For more information call Linda at 229-221-5469.
All unmanned dumpster sites closed
Grady County officials have closed the last of the unmanned dumpster sites and replaced them with five manned garbage sites at various site through the county. The sites are located at 362 Beck Branch Rd. in Calvary, 1864 N. Broad St. in Cairo, 2377 Ridge Rd. in Cairo, 20th Street, SE in Cairo and 155 Bunn Lane in Whigham. All manned sites are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Household trash as well as white and brown goods are accepted at each of these sites. Please remember to follow all instructions concerning items that are allowed and prohibited when using the manned dumpster sites.
