THOMASVILLE – A record-setting performance by the Brookwood Warriors offense last Friday night was overshadowed by four costly turnovers. The Warriors will need to correct those mistakes if Brookwood is to break through with a win this week against Tattnall Square Academy.
Brookwood quarterback Rodge Waldrop threw for 499 yards and seven touchdowns, both school records, in a 56-47 loss last week against Terrell Academy. Destin Moore snagged 10 receptions for a school-record 197 yards. But four fumbles cost the Warriors a chance at their first victory of the season.
“I’ve just always thought that offensive football, it’s about making people defend the whole field, width wise and vertically. We’re doing a great job of that,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “It’s about getting your playmakers in space. We’re doing a great job of that. They’re making plays.
“But it’s also about not beating yourself. That last part there, we’ve still got work to do. We’ve just had too many turnovers. We’ve got to clean those up.”
Waldrop’s performance was remarkable considering the pressure he felt much of the night.
“It’s one thing to throw for 500 yards when your jersey’s not dirty. But it got dirty in a hurry,” Boggs said. “He really showed a lot of toughness. I was really proud of that. Our playmakers made plays out there. We’d love to get the turnovers back.”
Waldrop connected with TJ Thomas for touchdown tosses of 50 and 30 yards; with Grant Gaston for touchdown throws of 35 and 10 yards; with Kelton Lewis for a 10-yard touchdown; with Moore for an 81-yard touchdown; and with Strong Beverly for a 10-yard scoring toss.
“There’s a lot to build off of, for sure. We’ve just got to keep fighting for those other inches,” Boggs said.
