English endures eight-hole playoff for second PGA win of the season

CROMWELL, Conn. — Harris English birdied the eighth playoff hole Sunday, outlasting Kramer Hickox to win The Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. 

English drained a long birdie putt on the 18th hole to get to 13 under for the tournament..

He missed a birdie putt on the sixth playoff hole, after Hickox made a par. 

English, who grew up in Thomasville, shot a 5-under 65.in the final round. 

Hickox sank a 9-foot putt on the 18th to tie English and force a playoff.

English had a one-stroke lead after a birdie on the 16th. But his second shot on the par-4 17th went over the green and he could not get up and down to save par. 

With the win, English went to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings and claimed the winner’s purse of more than $1.3 million.

English won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in early January and he was the highest finishing American golfer at the U.S. Open last week at Torrey Pines. 

Sunday’s win was the fourth career win for English.
