CAIRO — Cairo High School and the University of Georgia Grady County Archway Partnership are looking for the help of Grady County artists.

A mural of Cairo native Jackie Robinson is being painted at the Cairo High baseball field, Jackie Robinson Field, on June 25-26.

“The mural at the CHS field is honoring one of Grady County’s best,” Cairo High art teacher Scott Easom said in a news release. “Aesthetically, nothing beats a hand-painted mural reflecting the great achievements of the one and only Jackie Robinson.”

Robinson was born in Cairo on Jan. 31, 1919. He became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball, when he started for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.

The Hall of Famer won Rookie of the Year. Robinson later went on to win NL MVP honors in 1949. He helped lead the Dodgers to the World Series title in 1955.

The idea for the mural came from students at the UGA College of Environment and Design. It is part of the Cairo High campus revitalization plan.

Cairo High art students are working on this project with Professor Dr. Joe Norman and the UGA Lamar Dodd School of Art “Color the World Bright” mural program.
