Pebble Hill Plantation is proud to announce an exciting new tour set to open this fall. Made possible by a matching grant from the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. and Thomasville Garden Club, Inc., the Green Arrow Tour is a self-guided historic landscape tour that highlights and interprets twelve locations featuring historic and native plantings throughout Pebble Hill’s main grounds and gardens.
“Our garden club members are so pleased to be a part of the Green Arrow Tour. Pebble Hill is such an asset to our community and a garden tour is the perfect way to enhance the experience of touring this beautiful property,” said Debbie Wright, Thomasville Garden Club president.
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Pebble Hill owner Kate Hanna Harvey commissioned Cleveland, Ohio landscape architect, Ethelwyn Harrison, to develop a master plan for Pebble Hill. Her goal was to create a setting in the English formal style that would be most pleasing in winter and early spring when the Hanna family was in residence and welcoming house guests. Miss Harrison’s plan resulted in an overall design that showcased beautiful vistas throughout the property and remains in the Pebble Hill archives today along with her detailed notes regarding care and maintenance of the plantings.
The goal of the Green Arrow Tour is to interpret the historical landscaping and enhance the visitor experience by adding a self-guided tour option for visitors to wander at their own pace, observing and learning about Pebble Hill’s historical landscape. Green directional arrows will guide visitors to designated focal points marked with interpretive signage featuring species names, historical information about the plantings, historical photographs, and other pertinent information.
“We are so grateful to the Garden Club of Georgia and the Thomasville Garden Clubs for their generosity in making the Green Arrow Tour possible,” said Whitney White, Pebble Hill executive director. “Having the opportunity to share with the public the vision that Miss Harrison and Mrs. Harvey had for the landscape design of Pebble Hill allows for another level of interpretation of this property.”
Plans are underway for the Green Arrow Tour’s official grand opening to take place in the fall. Event details will be publicly released as the date draws near.
About Pebble Hill
Pebble Hill Plantation was developed into a prime 20th century shooting plantation by the Hanna family of Cleveland, Ohio in the early 1900s. Elisabeth “Pansy” Ireland Poe, a Hanna granddaughter and the last family member to own the property, willed the plantation to become a museum at her death. The 3,000-acre property has been open to the public since October 1983 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Pebble Hill’s mission is to present and interpret the site to the public on educational levels that cover the areas of art, antiques, furnishings, history, and human interest. A private operating 501(c)(3) entity, Pebble Hill Foundation’s purpose is to operate exclusively for charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes, or for the prevention of cruelty to children and animals.
Pebble Hill offers guided tours of the Main House and self-guided tours of the grounds to the general public. Educational programming includes a variety of opportunities for school groups, local organizations, and families. Visitors can expand their knowledge of the region’s cultural and natural resources through personalized guided tours and hands-on workshops and activities throughout the year.
