THOMASVILLE — The Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets are going overtime with their track and field season this year.

Just a week after helping Central finish seventh in the Class AAAA championships, Tykeem Wallace and Ethan Phillips have received an invitation to participate in the Atlanta Track Meet of Champions, scheduled for Saturday at Marietta High School. They will compete against other athletes from across the state regardless of classifications.

Wallace was crowned as the 100-meter champion and also finished runner-up in the 200-meter dash. He was also part of the 400-meter relay team that finished fifth.

Phillips established a new school record in the 110-meter hurdles, breaking Nic Dodson’s mark of 14.01 seconds. He would have been a top state contender in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles but was injured during the preliminary rounds.

“The Thomas County Central boys track and field team concluded what was a very exciting season. The team entered the season with high expectations of competing for a state title,” said Central boys coach Mikeal Lovejoy. “The team fell short of the goal of state champions but did finish the season as the seventh overall team in Class AAAA.

“This season was highlighted by record-setting performances by our athletes as new school marks were established in the 3,200-meter relay, 110-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash.”

Central’s 1,600-meter relay team of Al’marion Thomas, Ladarius Paytee, Josiah Ganga and Jordan Jones finished third at state.
