Union Spring to hold homecoming Sunday

The members of Union Springs Baptist Church, located north of Whigham, invite former pastors, members and friends to attend homecoming services with them on Sunday, May 23 beginning with Sunday School at 10 a.m. Former pastor Rev. Haskell White will deliver the morning message, with Glenda White as soloist. All are invited to enjoy lunch in the fellowship area following the service.

City plans public hearing on proposal budget

The City of Cairo will have a public hearing to receive resident input for FY 2021-22 on Monday, May 24 at 6 p.m. at the council chambers located at 101-B N. Broad St. A draft copy of the proposal budget is available for review May 17-21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the office of the city manager located at the Cairo City Hall on North Broad Street.

Summer Reading Program starts June 1

The annual Summer Reading Program will be held June 1-August 14 at the Roddenbery Memorial Library. This theme for this year is “Tails and Tales” an all children in the community are invited to participate. The kickoff for the Summer Reading Program will be held on Saturday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature Dewayne Reynolds with Dr. Magical Balloons at 10:30 a.m. There will also be an animal adoption fair, snow cones and more. Any child under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult to attend and masks are required for entry.

VFW holding gun raffle during May

VFW Post 8433 is holding a gun raffle for a Golden Boy .22 Special with 24 Carat Inlay and Etchings for $5 per ticket. You can purchase tickets to win the gun every Friday evening in May at Mr. Chick and on Saturdays in May at South Georgia Outdoors.

Cairo High School graduation is May 28

Officials at Cairo High School have announced that graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2021 will be held on Friday, May 28 starting at 8 p.m. Graduation will take place at West Thomas Stadium and each member of the Class of ’21 will receive 15 tickets to attend. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 29 at 9 a.m.

All unmanned dumpster sites closed

Grady County has closed the last of its unmanned dumpster sites and replaced them with five manned garbage sites at various site through the county. The sites are located at 362 Beck Branch Rd. in Calvary, 1864 N. Broad St. in Cairo, 2377 Ridge Rd. in Cairo, 20th Street, SE in Cairo and 155 Bunn Lane in Whigham. All manned sites are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Household trash as well as white and brown goods are accepted at each of these sites. Please remember to follow all instructions concerning items that are allowed and prohibited when using the manned dumpster sites.

Chamber, JDA and CHS to hold job fair

Cairo High School College and Career Academy, along with the Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce and the Joint Development Authority, will be holding a Job Fair in the CHS Gym on Thursday, May 20. The job fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and is open to all juniors and seniors. From 5-7 p.m., the event is open to the general public. If your business or industry would like to participate in the Job Fair, call the chamber of commerce at 377-3663.

Make and Take Crafts for Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, the Roddenbery Memorial Library has several new “Make and Take” items designed to help foster better mental health. Teens can now pick up a kit to create their very own peaceful Zen Garden.

Zen gardens use rocks and gravel or sand to recreate the essence of nature. A rake is used to create swirling patterns and lines are important as they have a calming effect on the mind. The act of raking can help to order peace to the wandering mind. Teens must be present to pick up this craft while supplies last. Contact the library for more information.
