Lady Jackets take second at region track meet

THOMASVILLE —Thomas County Central’s track and field finished second at the Region 1-AAAA track and field championships Thursday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.
“It was an awesome day for the girls as 12 of them qualified to go on to compete at Sections on May 8 in Columbus, Georgia. They have fought hard all year long to get to this point, and we just want them to continue to get better each day,” Central coach Chad Ward said. “I’m super excited for all of them as many of them have already accomplished the goals that they set out for the year. It was great to see the smiles on their faces as their names were being called to receive their medals.”
The 400-meter relay team of Shameria Wright, Sania Virgil, Jacora Tippins and Anna Spencer won the region championship, as did the 3,200-meter relay team of Anna James, Dayana Clark, I’Keyera Hill and Gracie Adams. The 1,600-meter relay team of Wright, Clark, Amanda Everett and Hill placed second.
James set a school record in the 3,200 meters in winning the championship. Her time was 11:22.54. She also won region in the 800 meters and 1,600 meters.
Virgil won region in the 300-meter hurdles and placed fourth in the long jump. Anna Spencer won region in the 100-meter dash and placed second in the long jump and in the 200-meter dash.
Kalayah Clark placed third in the shot put, while Travesha Giddens finished in fourth.
Wright won the region in the high jump. Kalayah Clark won region in the discus.
Ja’myia Herring finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.
