Downtown Cairo to host traveling art exhibit

The City of Cairo, in partnership with the Thomasville Center for the Arts, will be bringing a traveling art exhibition of large murals to downtown Cairo beginning on February 1 through March 14. Eight temporary murals will be put on display in downtown Cairo as part of the TCA’s “Walk on the Wild Side” public art display. Everyone is invited to come enjoy this exciting art on display around downtown Cairo.

COVID vaccinations expand this week

The Grady County Health Department has announced that its COVID vaccination administration will expand this week to include anyone who is 65 or older and their caregivers, law enforcement and fire personnel including volunteer firemen. Those who qualify may schedule an appointment to receive the vaccine by calling the Health Department’s hotline at (229) 352-6567.

History museum plans fundraiser on February 4

The Grady County Museum of History is holding its annual fundraiser and asking for the support of the local community. A chicken pilau dinner will be available on Thursday, February 4 at the museum. Board members and supporters of the museum are currently selling the tickets for the pilau for $8 with drive-thru pickup. You may also purchase tickets for the fundraiser at the Museum of History on North Broad Street during their regular business hours, Tuesday-Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Volunteers needed to assist with COVID-19 vaccinations

With the delivery of the COVID-19 vaccines to Grady County expected soon, the Grady County Health Department is seeking those who can assist with vaccine administration. Volunteers can be persons with medical training such as EMTs, pharmacists, paramedics, RNs, LPNs, NPs and students if accompanied by an instructor. If you would like to be added to a list of volunteers, please contact the Grady County Health Department.

Rattlesnake Roundup delayed until March

The Whigham Community Club has announced that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the 61st Annual Rattlesnake Roundup has been moved to a new date. The annual event will be held on March 6. In addition to the change of date, the club is making another big change in the upcoming roundup. Beginning the this coming year, the event will eliminate hunting snakes at the roundup. Instead, Jason Clark with the Southeastern Reptile Rescue will provide educational displays that will include handling and exhibition of various type of snakes. There will be plenty of music, vendors, food and entertainment throughout the day and everyone is reminded to put this new date on their calendar.

Chamber seeks nominations for annual awards

The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce is currently seeking nominations for its annual community awards to be presented in January. Courtney King, interim executive director, is asking local citizens nominate those who they feel have made a real difference in our community over the last year in the following categories: Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Community Service Award, Young Professional of the Year, Farm Family of the Year, Large Business of the Year, and Small Business of the Year. Roddenbery Library open on Saturdays

After a lengthy closure due to COVID-19, the Roddenbery Memorial Library has announced that they are once again open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Patrons are still required to wear masks while visiting the library and maintain social distancing. All rooms are disinfected before, during and after hours at the library.
