God’s examples for Man

I think one of the best proofs that the Bible is true is its honesty. There is no sugar coating; the Bible “tells it like it is.” If the Word of God, written by men under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, were made up or man-made, it would not contain much of its content. Instead, the Word is bluntly honest in reporting events.

A good example is the life of David, a man “after God’s own heart.” This choice man loved the Lord and served Him well. But David also committed grave sins, and the Bible tells us all about it. David committed adultery with Bathsheba and then murdered, in effect, her husband Uriah, a loyal and faithful man and good soldier.

When God’s prophet Nathan pointed out to David his sins, David repented to the Lord, and God forgave him. But the world is a different matter. It never forgives, so David paid for his sins the rest of his life through great heartache and disappointment. The Bible assures us, “Your sins will find you out” (Numbers 32:23).

God’s great prophet Elijah is another good example. Here was a man of God who performed miracles. He was able, through prayer, to get God to send rain on Israel after three and a half years of draught. Elijah had brought to life a widow’s son who had died. Yet when Queen Jezebel threatened to kill him, Elijah ran like a scared rabbit. If the Bible were not true, this part of the great man’s life would not have been included in God’s Word.

There are many other examples in God’s Word to both inspire and encourage us. Another one of significance is the life of the great missionary servant and Apostle Paul (formerly Saul of Tarsus who hated Christ). Paul also performed wonders and miracles. He too brought back to life Eutychus, a young man who fell from a three-story window while listening to Paul preach.

Yet Paul had to admit in his letter to the Romans, “For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do” (Rom. 7:14-15). Would that admission about God’s “chosen vessel” have been included in the Bible if it had been only contrived by man? No. The Word of God is never honey glossed. It bluntly and honestly tells us the facts as they occurred. The Bible also issues many warnings. God loved but also judged His chosen people, the Jews. God still watches over and even disciplines His children (saved souls).

God loved man enough to die for him on the cross of Calvary. Have you believed what God requires and have you trusted His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to save your soul? I could not ask you a more important question.

Even so, Amen!
