Commissioners meetings changed
The Grady County Board of Commissioners office has been relocated to the former senior citizens center at 33 17th Street, NW in Cairo and all monthly meetings for the commissioners will be held at this location. The twice-monthly meeting for the Board of Commissioners is held on the first Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. and the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. The meetings are open to the public.
Library to close for MLK Day holiday
The Roddenbery Memorial Library will be closed for the Dr. Martin King Jr. Day holiday on Monday, January 18. The regular hours of the library are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
COVID vaccinations expand to more citizens
The Grady County Health Department has announced that its COVID-19 vaccination administration will expand this week to include anyone who is 65 or older and their caregivers, law enforcement and fire personnel including volunteer firemen. Those who qualify may schedule an appointment to receive the vaccine by calling the Health Department’s hotline at (229) 352-6567.
Make and take crafts this weekend
The Roddenbery Memorial Library will have a special event for teens this Saturday. Teens are invited to the “Make-It Craft” event where they will learn how to create a Paper Lantern. The event is this Saturday, January 16 at noon.
Volunteers needed to assist with COVID-19 vaccinations
With the delivery of the COVID-19 vaccines to Grady County expected soon, the Grady County Health Department is seeking those who can assist with vaccine administration. Volunteers can be persons with medical training such as EMTs, pharmacists, paramedics, RNs, LPNs, NPs and students if accompanied by an instructor. If you would like to be added to a list of volunteers, contact the Grady County Health Department.
Rattlesnake Roundup delayed until March
The Whigham Community Club has announced that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the 61st Annual Rattlesnake Roundup has been moved to a new date. The annual event will be held on March 6. In addition to the change of date, the club is making another big change in the upcoming roundup. Beginning this coming year, the event will eliminate hunting snakes at the roundup. Instead, Jason Clark with the Southeastern Reptile Rescue will provide educational displays that will include handling and exhibition of various type of snakes. There will be plenty of music, vendors, food and entertainment throughout the day and everyone is reminded to put this new date on their calendar.
Chamber seeks nominations for annual awards
The Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce is currently seeking nominations for its annual community awards to be presented in January. Courtney King, the interim executive director, is asking that local citizens nominate those who they feel have made a real difference in the community over the last year in the following categories: Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Community Service Award, Young Professional of the Year, Farm Family of the Year, Large Business of the Year and Small Business of the Year. Roddenbery Library open Saturdays
After a lengthy closure due to COVID-19, the Roddenbery Memorial Library has announced that they are open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Patrons are still required to wear masks while visiting the library and maintain social distancing. All rooms are disinfected before, during and after hours at the library.
History Museum open and looking for volunteers
The Grady County Museum and History has reopened to the public and is seeking not only visitors but also people to volunteer their time to improve the experience for those who attend. The museum features artifacts and displays from Grady County including a new section that shows how life was for local residents in their homes during the early days of the community. The museum, located at 101 N. Broad St., is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They are also looking for volunteers and people to make monetary donations and donations of artifacts to add to the collection.
New Anime Club meeting at library
A new club created for fans of anime is now meeting at the Roddenbery Memorial Library on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. The group is for ages 13-18 and meets in the teen room of the library where they view anime, talk about their favorite characters and hear other people’s suggestions on new anime to try.
