THOMASVILLE — Local law enforcement agencies, including Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol, are gearing up for an onslaught of holiday travelers.

“Wednesday and Sunday will be our peak days,” said Sgt. 1st Class John VanLandingham, Post 12 GSP commander. “We’ll have every trooper at the post out.”

Travelers will be en route to Thanksgiving destinations on Wednesday and return on Sunday, VanLandingham said, adding that troopers will be out every day of the holiday travel period.

Troopers will be on the lookout for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs or otherwise impaired, distracted drivers and those not wearing seat belts.

The commander said troopers will participate in high-visibility patrols and aggressively stop speeders.

Troopers also will help motorists stranded along highways.

Boston Police Department is joining the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to remind drivers and passengers during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period to not risk a ticket by remembering to click it with their seat belt.

“Boston Police Department is joining sheriffs’ offices, police departments and the Georgia State Patrol to enforce seat belt, speeding, DUI, distracted driving and all traffic laws during the extended holiday weekend with the goal of reducing traffic crashes, deaths and injuries,” said Boston Police Chief Charles Pettus. “The holidays are time meant to be spent enjoying family and spending time with those that are most important to us all. Don’t risk losing out by choosing not to buckle up or trying to save a couple minutes by exceeding the posted speed limit.”

Predicting heavier than usual traffic on city thoroughfares, Thomasville Police Department Maj. Shane Harris said TPD officers will be on the lookout for distracted, impaired and drunk drivers.

Thomas County Sheriff’s Office patrol officers will monitor holiday traffic throughout the community, said Capt. Steven Jones, sheriff’s office public information officer.
