Slight increase in Grady’s COVID-19 cases

CAIRO — Rates of COVID-19 in Grady County saw a small uptick this past week, though the number of new cases was still smaller than what the county was facing at the beginning of October.

Twenty new cases of the novel coronavirus were identified in Grady County over the past seven days, according the the Georgia Department of Public Health, bringing the county’s running total up to 866. The new DPH data marks the third consecutive week that 20 individuals or fewer have been diagnosed with the virus — the lowest rate of spread the county has seen since the early months of the pandemic.

No new virus patients were admitted to the hospital due to symptoms, and the county has not attributed a death to the virus since October 24. The county’s overall death total stands at 25.

The reduced rates of the virus were reflected in data released earlier this week by the Grady County School System, which recorded just one positive case Tuesday.

A total of 55 students and three employees were in quarantine earlier this week. Superintendent Kermit Gilliard said the majority of the more than three dozen quarantines added this week can be attributed to a Thomasville dancer who interacted with several Grady County dance students at a local gymnasium before testing positive for the virus. Gilliard said the dancer was apparently unaware that she was carrying the virus at the time.

The Grady County Health Department has added nine COVID-19 test dates through November at their drive-through testing site on 4th Street SE. The testing dates are as follows:
