CAIRO — No charges are pending in the case of a weekend traffic incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian, according to the Cairo Police Department.

CPD investigator Dewayne Pearson said police believe 67-year-old Roy Myrick was likely intoxicated at the time he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 84 East Saturday evening. Myrick, who later died from his injuries, failed a blood alcohol test, and Pearson said police believe there was no negligence on behalf of the driver, Clair Summers McCaskill.

McCaskill voluntarily submitted herself to a drug and alcohol test, the results of which are still pending, though Pearson said police have no reason to believe she was inebriated at the time of the incident.

The results of those tests are all that remain before police can close the case, Pearson said.

“We’ve already collected everything from the scene, processed it and gotten everything accounted for as far as anything that we would need to later reconstruct the accident if needed,” he said.

The incident occurred Saturday at about 8:35 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 84 East and 9th Street NE.

Police say McCaskill was headed westbound on the inside lane of the 900 block of 84 East when she struck Myrick.

According to a police incident report, McCaskill told authorities Myrick stepped in front of her vehicle walking south across 84. The collision did not occur at a crosswalk.

McCaskill told police she attempted to avoid Myrick but was unable to do so. She also told police that Myrick was wearing dark clothing.

Neither McCaskill nor either of the two passengers in her vehicle sustained any injuries from the collision.
