CAIRO — Grady County Sheriff Harry Young is recuperating at home after having been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus last week, the sheriff’s office says.
The 76-year-old sheriff, who discovered September 14 that he had COVID-19, was discharged from Grady General Hospital over the weekend and will remain in quarantine for another week.
“He’s doing well,” said Capt. Daniel Singletary, who has been tasked with leading the sheriff’s office in Young’s absence.
Singletary escorted the sheriff from the hospital to his home Saturday afternoon.
Young, who initially admitted himself to the hospital last week after experiencing back pains before learning of his diagnosis, will be released from home quarantine September 28. Regular operations at the sheriff’s office will resume that day as well.
Sheriff’s office personnel were tested last week for possible exposure to the virus after learning of Young’s diagnosis, with no positive results returning. The entire facility was sprayed with disinfectant.
In the meantime, the sheriff’s office itself will continue to remain closed for the rest of the week. Deputies will respond to calls as needed, but the facility itself will be off-limits to the public, and suspects of non-violent crimes who are experiencing symptoms of the virus will generally not be held in custody for extended periods of time.
