THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Backs the Blue’s first attempt to show support for local law enforcement did not pan out.
A rally that was to take place at Deep South fairgrounds was cancelled after a similar event at Stone Mountain was interrupted by protesters and shut down.

“Law enforcement’s gotten such a bad rap in much of the country,” said Len Powell, Backs the Blue chairman.
Backs the Blue is raising money to give to local law enforcement agencies — Thomasville Police Department, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office and police departments in the smaller municipalities.
“Our goal is $20,000,” Powell said. “Many people appreciate police.”
Backs the Blue was organized in late July and gained momentum in August, said Serina Lowery, fundraising committee leader.
“The was no way we could secure a rally. We did not want anyone to get hurt,” Lowery said. “We don’t need that here in Thomasville.”
Law enforcement agencies may use the money raised to fund agency needs.

For instance, Lowery said, Pavo police do not have first-aid kits.
“If they are first on scene, all they can do is wait,” she added.
The fundraiser, Lowery said, is the group’s way of showing law enforcement officers “we appreciate them and need them. We support our officers 100 percent.”
The group has received “tremendous” support, Lowery said.
Backs the Blue T-shirts and masks are available, with all proceeds going to funding law enforcement needs. Those who purchase T-shirts and masks are asked to wear the apparel on Saturday, Oct. 17.
“Show the police you have their backs,” Lowery said. “We need our police.”
T-shirts are available at Susie Q’s, Ponder’s and local Republican party headquarters.
The fundraising deadline is Oct. 31. Disbursement of funds is planned for early November.
Checks may be mailed to Backs the Blue, P.O. Box 981, Thomasville, Georgia, 31799.
