THOMASVILLE — Thomasville City Council members will pen a letter in support of the Thomasville farmers market, which is on a list of Georgia farmers markets that might close as a result of the coronavirus’ impact on state revenue.

At a Wednesday council workshop, Council member David Hufstetler said the threat of closing might be “political posturing.”

“Our farmers market is the second-largest in the state,” he said. “I suspect it can be saved if we’re the first to get in line.”

Several years ago, the Thomasville farmers market outdistanced Savannah and Macon farmers markets combined, Husftetler said.

“My understanding is it is cash-flow positive,” Hufstetler told council members.

Said Council member Jay Flowers, “It’s a very important property. We certainly don’t need it to shutter.”

Mayor Greg Hobbs also voiced support for the market.

Hufstetler urged council members to contact District 173 state Rep. Darlene Taylor, a Thomasville Republican.
