THOMASVILLE — A Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol trooper was patrolling the north bypass when he encountered an oncoming vehicle with no headlights on.

According to a report, Trooper Steven Kornegay intended to stop the vehicle and warn the driver in the 8:30 p.m. Tuesday incident. The 2019 Toyota Camry rental car slowed down and pulled onto the shoulder of the road, then accelerated and headed east on the bypass.

“The passenger was throwing stuff out a window,” said post commander Sgt. 1st Class John VanLandingham.

The Camry turned onto Old Albany Road and headed into Thomasville traveling 65 to 70 miles per hour, VanLandingham said.

Kornegay called for backup. A Thomas County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw the pursuit and assisted.

VanLandigham said the trooper attempted the GSP precision mobilization technique to force the car from the road, when the driver slammed on brakes and stopped.

The driver, Demarcus Bowdry, 35, 115 Georgia Ave., was charged with felony attempting to elude and driving under the influence of drugs.

The passenger, Demarcus Brown, 29, 101 Rand Floyd Road, Bainbridge, has outstanding warrants in Cobb County.

The contraband thrown from the vehicle is believed to be spice, synthetic marijuana, said Louis Schofill, Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division commander.

The drug blew back into the car as it was being thrown from the passenger window, Schofill said, adding that the contraband was found throughout the car.

“We’re investigating the source,” he said.
